Florida Education Institute’s Medical Assistant program covers both the administrative (front) and clinical (back) skills for this profession.

What does a Medical Assistant do

Medical Assistants perform administrative and clinical duties usually under the direction of a physician and they help medical offices run smoothly. Medical Assistants provide valuable health care services to patients.

Medical Assistants typically do the following:

  • Assist physicians with patient examinations
  • Assist physicians with treatments
  • Obtain and record patient history
  • Maintain medical records
  • Handling patient accounts and records
  • Insurance processing and billing
  • Enter health information data into electronic health records
  • Patient overall services
  • Schedule appointments
  • Measure vital signs, such as blood pressure, temperatures, weight and pulse

Employment Outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical assistants is projected to grow 23 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. Increased demand for an aging population and demand for preventive medical services, which are often provided by physicians. As their practices expand, physicians will hire more assistants to perform routine administrative and clinical duties, allowing the physicians to see more patients.
